Biological Control and Plant Resistance These proceedings* contain papers presented at an African regional seminar `Insect pest control for small-holders: integrating biological control and host plant resistance' organized by the Institute of Agricultural Research (Ethiopia), IIBC and the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (Netherlands). The seminar, held in Addis Ababa in October 1995, was attended by scientists from 18 sub-Saharan countries and four European countries and representatives from international organizations. The objectives of the seminar were to promote contact and exchange of experiences on issues relating to the development of pest control through integrated pest management (IPM), and to develop strategies to integrate host plant resistance and biological control. The plenary session examined IPM in complex African farming systems, breeding for host plant resistance and the role of genetic resources in IPM, the biological control of insects in an IPM context, and host plant - parasitoid interactions. Working group reports are included covering basic research needs for the further evaluation of biological control and host plant resistance mechanisms; protocols and procedures for the practical integration of biological control and host plant resistance at the research level; and improving farmers' perceptions of crop protection in Africa and integrating biological control and host plant resistance on the farm. Short communications are also included from three regional working groups (West and Central Africa, Eastern Africa, and Southern Africa) and two commodity working groups (cowpeas, cotton and coffee, and cereals). *Integrating biological control and host plant resistance.
